This lab based experiment will use a microcosm setup to investigate factors affecting the rate of seagrass decomposition. Factors of interest include temperature, sediment cover and bioturbation by infaunal animals. By undertaking controlled experiments, this work will help understand the link between ecosystem services and biodiversity in a changing environment.
Research from the USA has shown that seagrass beds can act as nurseries for juvenile scallops and a refuge from predation for adults. In some cases local seagrass beds in the southwest sit adjacent to scallop fishing grounds. Is there a link? This project is primarily field based, measuring densities, predation rates and habitat preferences of scallops in local seagrasss beds.
This project could provide an excellent case study of how protected marine habitats can lead to benefits for fishermen and the local economy.

Forensic Taphonomy in the Marine Environment
What happens to a body that ends up in the sea? Is there a way to tell how long it has been there? There is currently little data to help answer these questions. Previous experiments have used marine & terrestrial mammal carcasses to help answer these questions, but more work is needed. A project in this area would involve a mixture of lab based microscopy and field experiments. Samples are currently available for an immediate start. Current evidence suggests that certain types of carcass are more appealing to scavengers than others. Tonnes of fish (teleost & elasmobranch) and cephalopod (cuttlefish) carcasses are discarded annually. Do scavengers use these resources differently? This project will use underwater video cameras to quantify scavenging rates, identify scavenger species, and record behavioral reaction of scavengers to different types of bait.

This work would be primarily lab based and involve a combination of classic food choice experiments as well as basic natural history observation. This project would be dependent on establishing a collaboration with the National Marine Aquarium, so if you are interested please let me know so we can make arrangements in good time.
