Underwater Marine Observatory Systems
During my PhD I was involved in helping to set up the Underwater Observatory at the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences - Kristineberg in Sweden. This camera system streams live underwater video over the web as well as storing periodic stills. Our initial experiments were looking at the scavenging and decomposition of marine mammal carrion (see video below and the paper).
Whilst at Plymouth University I've been working on a new sister observatory - the Plymouth Underwater Teaching Observatory (PLUTO). This will be a live underwater camera in Plymouth sound that can be used for student project work looking at habitat use of coastal habitats. This system is due to come online in spring 2015, so watch this space!
